The summer is perfect for spending time outside — until you’re ready to cool off indoors. Dozens of insects and pests are looking for a new environment to relax in as well, but with the right summer pest control system in place, you can keep your home safe and clean.
Here’s how to prevent and get rid of summer bugs in the house.
Ants, Fruit Flies, and Mosquitos, Oh My!
Ants, fruit flies, and mosquitos are burdens throughout summer. It helps to know exactly what you’re dealing with when drawing up solutions for your residential space.
Ant Pest Control
Figuring out how to get rid of ants is tricky. See what you can do to identify the species and what the ants are attempting to reach:
- Pavement ants: An ant species that digs around wet concrete. Pavement ants can move indoors to the kitchen and bathrooms where moisture is present. Improve entry door seals, wipe up spilled liquids, and clean your gutters to keep these pests away.
- Odorous house ants: These ants give off a foul odor when crushed. Odorous house ants hide in wet crevices and wood. Get rid of this ant species by removing standing water and trimming back any trees dangling over your roof to discourage infiltration.
- Carpenter ants: A population of carpenter ants threatens your home’s infrastructure. The ants look for moist wood to burrow inside and create nests. Prevent an infestation by completing exterior home repairs, fixing leaky faucets, and sealing cracks in walls.
Fruit Flies
Fruit flies reproduce quickly, and you’ll see them around food on the counter. The best way to prevent fruit flies from entering the home is to throw away food you’re unlikely to eat — especially bananas, apples and pears that live in bowls.
You can manage a fruit fly problem by creating a trap. Grab a tall and narrow bottle and fill the bottom with apple cider vinegar and a drop of dish soap. The vinegar will attract the fruit flies, and the trap will keep them from flying up and out of the bottle. Let the bottle sit for a few days to see what you catch.
Mosquitos
If you notice many mosquitos around right now, there’s a good chance your environment has something to do with it. These insects thrive in damp areas like wet grass, plants, ponds, and bird baths.
During the summer, keep up with yard maintenance to deter mosquitos from visiting your property. Cutting the grass, cleaning outdoor swimming pools, watering plants appropriately, and ensuring your home’s drainage system works properly to keep mosquitos away.
